Introduction

The Board of Mississippi Levee Commissioners has the constitutional responsibility to the State of Mississippi to operate and maintain a system of levees along the Mississippi River. They also have the legislative authority to participate with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on various projects on the interior drainage such as the Big Sunflower River and Tributaries Project, Upper Steele Bayou Project and the Yazoo Backwater Project. Those specific areas of responsible are as follows:

  • Mississippi River Mainline Levee - 163 miles
  • Greenville Harbor Dike - 8 miles
  • Brunswick Extension Levee - 13 miles
  • Yazoo Backwater Levee - 28 miles

Total: 212 miles of Levees

  • Black Bayou - 35.77 miles
  • Bogue Hasty - 6.5 miles
  • Bogue Phalia - 58.2 miles
  • Clear Creek - 13.15 miles
  • Ditchlow Bayou - 4.16 miles
  • Dowling Bayou - 7.88 miles
  • Holly Bluff Cut-Off - 4.21 miles
  • Hushpuckena River - 27.5 miles
  • Little Sunflower River - 20.85 Main Canal 25.3 miles
  • Snake Creek - 9.8 miles
  • Steele Bayou - 58.24 miles
  • Twin Lakes Bayou - 2.46 miles
  • Valewood Ditch - 2.42 miles
  • Yazoo Backwater Channel - 24.04 miles
